Ashland School District A-1 was
laid out and organized on February 18, 1908. The first meeting as held on
March 21, 1908. The school district changed boundaries on August 28,
1919. Springhill School District #44 in Coal County was annexed to Ashland
on July 5, 1957. Ashland School District A-1 or 77 was annexed to Stuart,
Hughes County; Coalgate, Coal County; Haywood and Kiowa, Pittsburg County on
April 26, 1963.
Ashland school was annexed to Kiowa on April 6, 1966 and the school closed for
good.
The Ashland School system started
with a large grade school, but only had 2 years of high school; consequently,
those who wanted to finish had to go to another school--some boarded and some
moved away. Later with the coming of cars, car pools got some to Kiowa,
Coalgate, and Stuart. Kiowa later established a bus route.
Many of the students walked several miles to get to
school or rode horseback, and they had one school wagon. Teaching supplies
were scarce and students had to purchase their own books. These could be
passed down or sold, so they took very good care of them.
